Inada Sōsai (Bokujinkai), a disciple of avant-garde calligrapher Morita Shiryū, who deeply influenced Matsuoka, writes the character “境” (boundary) using a large brush. He emphasizes grasping the structure of characters and the importance of daily training to animate the structure. He introduced his master’s words, “When you strike a dot, it’s good, but when you lift it up, love must be present.”

He dips the brush fully into the ink, lifts it up with one hand, and swiftly writes while exhaling strongly with “ku!”, “kukku!”, “ku!”. This whole process, from facing the paper, took less than 20 seconds. To this, Matsuoka responded, “I believe characters have a voice.”
